Obituary
Sigitis Banaitis passed away peacefully on Tuesday. February 9 at Whatcom Hospice House. He was 84 years old. Sy was born in Kaunas, Lithuania on September 22, 1936 to Justinas and Maria Banaitis.
At age 8 Sy’s family immigrated to the United States to escape the horrors of World War II. After completing high school. Sy attended Illinois State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. It was there that he met the love of his life, Daiva Audenas, also originally from Lithuania. Sy and Daiva met on a blind date and were married in September 1967. Sy went on to earn an MBA. He was a scientist and inventor. He invented a technique to bring blueberries to the US in winter. He would harvest the berries in South America and South Africa, then preserve them for shipping. A live-streaming memorial service to honor was held on Wednesday, February, 17th with Kim Wagner officiating. Sy is laid to rest in New York along side family members. Sy is survived by his loving wife, Daiva and a niece and nephew in California as well as a host of friends.
