On January 27, the Consulate General of Lithuania in Los Angeles marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp which was the largest camp created by Nazi Germany and its collaborators.
The Consulate General joined the World Jewish Congress campaign #WeRemember to commemorate more than 6 million victims who perished under the Nazi regime and to ensure that tragic history will never be forgotten.
To honor Holocaust survivors and those who risked their lives to save Jews from extermination – the Righteous, the team of Consulate General visited the memorial statue of Chiune Sugihara – the heroic Japanese vice-consul in Lithuania, who issued transit visas to thousands of Jews to help them escape the Holocaust. His memorial statue located in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles became a symbol of human compassion in the midst of the Holocaust tragedy.
Since the restoration of independence, Lithuania has pursued a responsible policy as regards the evaluation of the Holocaust initiated by the Nazis and carried out during their occupation in Lithuania. Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania designated the year 2020 as the year of the Vilna Gaon, the history of the Jews of Lithuania and Chiune Sugihara, providing a number of events related to education on the subject of the Holocaust.
