Spalio 22 d.

On October 22 at Horizon House in Seattle, Ilona Bray and her husband Stephen Soong presented the children’s book “Cat Takes Queen.” Although the novel is written for readers aged 8–12, it can genuinely appeal to people of any age, from eight to a hundred. The book about Morphy, a cat who loves to play chess, was published on October 13 by Feiwel & Friends.

The main character is Morphy, an independent and clever stray cat whose life turns on chess, friendship, and trust.

The presentation opened with Ilona’s mother, Ina Bray, a longtime member of our community, who spoke briefly about Ilona’s childhood. Ilona and Stephen then talked about the Facebook page created to promote the book, “Cats Teaches Chess” – be sure to visit it! Stephen shared the place chess holds in his own life. It has been with him since childhood and helped him find his place and fit in at school and in college.

Ilona read excerpts from the book and described the long road it took before the book reached its readers.

The book’s format is unusual: it does not only tell an engaging story, it also presents chess games with their moves described in detail. Readers can follow the game alongside Morphy’s story, or simply enjoy the narrative, even if chess has not caught their interest yet.

Members of the Lithuanian community also came to support Ilona and to get to know her work. At the end of the evening, the book was available for purchase and for signing by the authors.

We believe “Cat Takes Queen” will find many young and older readers!
